Conferences

Why go?

Attending conferences is a good way of finding out about the latest research in your area, meeting like-minded individuals, and sharing your own ideas with a wider audience.

The biggest conference in Australia is the annual Australasian Association of Philosophy (AAP) conference, held over several days in early July. The 2004 conferencewill be at South Molle Island. Many graduate students present papers at the AAP conference. Papers are accepted on the basis of an "abstract" submitted several months in advance. If you are on one of the main email lists (such as Aphil) you should receive a copy of the call for papers. There is also an annual AAP conference held in New Zealand. [none of these links work, conference reference very old]

Other, smaller conferences are also held around Australia on more specific areas. A list of upcoming conferences can be found on the Australasian Philosophy Network website. [404 error]

Funding

Faculty

The Faculties will provide $400 towards attendance at one interstate conference during your course of study. You must be presenting a paper related to your graduate research to be eligible.

RSSS

Students receive up to $750 a year for conference attendance. You may be allowed more if you can make a convincing case for it. You can also borrow a "School car" (with free petrol) to drive to conferences. See Di for details. If you borrow a car, please arrange it well in advance and remember to offer lifts to other RSSS/Faculties students who may be interested.
