Seminars

Regular events

Each philosophy department has a regular seminar series, where visiting speakers and sometimes staff members present papers on a wide range of topics. Regular attendance at your own department’s seminars is required; you are also very welcome to attend the other department’s seminars. The research seminars provide students with an overview of the different areas, methods and genres of which philosophy consists, and are an indispensable part of your graduate training. See theEvents page for more information on seminars in philosophy at ANU.

Many other parts of the University offer seminars which may be of interest; for example Political Science, Women’s Studies [link?], the Social and Political Theory Program in the RSSS [not separate to Philosophy?], the Centre for Law and Philosophy [?], and the Humanities Research Centre [404 on original link - Research School of Humanities instead?].

Organise your own

If you would like to see a particular speaker come and give a talk, or to organise a workshop or conference, get in touch with your Student Representatives. They may be able to get funding from Graduate Studies in Philosophy.

You are strongly encouraged to get together with your peers and organise your own seminars, work-in-progress group, or reading group. This can be a great way of learning about unfamiliar areas, discovering points of common interest, trying out your ideas in an informal setting, and so on.

You are also welcome to participate in the 4th Year Honours Seminar (contact Brian Garrett for details, Brian.Garrett AT anu.edu.au). You might also like to "audit" undergraduate courses. This is a good way of gaining general knowledge of an area you are unfamiliar with. (Approach the relevant lecturer first.)
