Honours
Why enrol
for the degree with Honours?
The purpose
of an Honours degree is to enable students of high calibre to
spread their wings by undertaking serious research and further
coursework in a chosen field of study for an additional year of
full-time study or part-time equivalent.
The Honours
degree provides students with the opportunity to refine their
analytical skills and research techniques while significantly
expanding employment and study options. A bachelor degree with
Honours is both a prestigious qualification in its own right and
also the most effective means of qualifying for higher degree
work at Masters and PhD level.
At ANU we
welcome Honours applicants from other universities in Australia
or overseas. In their Honours year, students sit in on both Advanced
courses (chosen from Advanced Ethical & Political Philosophy,
Advanced Analytic philosophy and Advanced Continental Philosophy)
and regular upper-level courses. In addition they write a sub-thesis
of up to 15,000 words (in consultation with a supervisor).
A unique attraction
of studying Philosophy at ANU is the possibility of interaction
with philosophers in the School of Humanities in the Faculties,
the Philosophy Program at
the Research School of Social Sciences (RSSS) and Centre
for Applied Philosophy and Ethics (CAPPE). These centres put
on numerous reading groups, and Honours students may write their
long essays based on attendance at such groups.
