Philosophy @ ANU

The Australian National University is one of the leading philosophy centres, not just in Australia, but in the world. At several different locations in the university, philosophers are engaged in cutting-edge innovative research and scholarship. Philosophy can be studied in the School of Humanities, in the Research School of Social Sciences (RSSS), and at the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE), each of which runs a weekly seminar program and other events.

A degree in philosophy from the ANU enjoys high international prestige. In particular, the Philosophy Program based in RSSS has an outstanding reputation, ranking among the top 15 philosophy programs in the world according to the Blackwell Philosophical Gourmet Report. This guide also rates some of RSSS's speciality areas much higher, particularly in the philosophy of mind, metaphysics, philosophy of biology, and in the area of decision, rational choice and game theory. CAPPE is one of the world's leading research centres in applied philosophy. Its emphasis is on ethics and public policy. It combines expertise in several traditional areas of philosophy including social and political philosophy and ethical theory and practice, with a strong interdisciplinary and applied focus. In the School of Humanities, a wide range of philosophical interests are represented, with internationally recognised expertise in many of the central areas of undergraduate and advanced study, including the history of philosophy, continental philosophy, philosophy of science, social, cultural and political theory, and metaphysics.

The ANU has around 20 staff members in permanent positions in philosophy, and in addition has a uniquely successful visitor program. Each year, a large number of distinguished scholars (30 or more) come to the ANU as visiting faculty. The visitor programs are open to visiting PhD students as well.
