Location

The ANU enjoys unusual cultural resources by virtue of being located in Australia's capital. Canberra is the home of the National Gallery, the National Library, the National MuseumQuestacon - the National Science and Technology Centre, the National Film and Sound Archiveand the Australian Institute of Sport. There are also many fine concert halls, theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Canberra is a very popular tourist destination.

Nestled beneath the Brindabella Ranges three hours' drive south-west of Sydney, Canberra is a two and a half hour drive from both the south coast of New South Wales and the ski fields of the Snowy Mountain Ranges. The city was designed by the American architect Walter Burley Griffin in 1911, and is possibly one of the most beautiful of his urban plans. Burley Griffin was concerned that Canberra should be in sympathy with the existing geography. Later development reflected the ideal of a series of 'villages' surrounding three satellite 'towns', linked by a central city area. As a result, the city has a great deal of park land (there are something like fourteen trees per person) and most suburbs are within easy walking distance of a nature reserve. An interesting touch has been to leave the hill-tops undeveloped (except for Parliament House!), creating some stunning views.

Money matters
