and access to free printing and photocopying within their department.
Funding for conference attendance and overseas fieldwork is available
through the Faculty and RSSS.

Location
The ANU enjoys
unusual cultural resources by virtue of being located in Australia's
capital. Canberra is the home of the National
Gallery, the National Library,
the National Museum, Questacon
- the National Science and Technology Centre, the National
Film and Sound Archive and the Australian
Institute of Sport. There are also many fine concert halls,
theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Canberra is a very popular
tourist destination.
Nestled beneath
the Brindabella Ranges three hours' drive south-west of Sydney,
Canberra is a two and a half hour drive from both the south coast
of New South Wales and the ski fields of the Snowy Mountain Ranges.
The city was designed by the American architect Walter Burley
Griffin in 1911, and is possibly one of the most beautiful of
his urban plans. Burley Griffin was concerned that Canberra should
be in sympathy with the existing geography. Later development
reflected the ideal of a series of 'villages' surrounding three
satellite 'towns', linked by a central city area. As a result,
the city has a great deal of park land (there are something like
fourteen trees per person) and most suburbs are within easy walking
distance of a nature reserve. An interesting touch has been to
leave the hill-tops undeveloped (except for Parliament House!),
creating some stunning views.
Money matters
Fees
& living expenses
Permanent
residents of Australia and New Zealand do not pay tuition fees
at ANU. However, there are tuition
fees for international students studying toward a research
PhD.
The International
Student Office that students should plan to spend a minimum of
$12,000-14,000 AUD on living expenses for each 42-week academic
year. See a sample
budget.
Paid
work
Graduate
Studies in Philosophy aims to give some paid tutoring work to
all PhD students who want it. Tutoring work can be undertaken
in conjunction with the Graduate School's Graduate
Teaching Program, a semester-long training course in academic
teaching.
Emergency
funds
The Postgraduate
and Research Students' Association (PARSA) provides loans
for students suffering financial problems.
